Roofing Services in St Mellons, Cardiff CF3
ST MELLONS
St Mellons is one of those Cardiff areas that means very different things depending on where exactly you live. The old village – the bit around St Mellons Parish Church, the ancient farmhouses along Old St Mellons Road, the cluster of listed stone buildings that predate the city by centuries – is genuinely rural in character. Narrow lanes, thick stone walls, properties that were built when lime mortar and natural Welsh slate were the only options going. That part of St Mellons feels closer to the Vale of Glamorgan than to Cardiff city centre, even though it’s only a few miles out.
Then there are the estates. From the 1990s onwards, substantial residential development pushed out across the fields around the old village – detached and semi-detached properties on closes and drives off the main road, similar in age and build spec to what you’d find in Pontprennau or Pentwyn. Different builder, different decade, different materials entirely from the old village core. Two quite separate roofing challenges sitting within the same CF3 postcode.
We work across both parts of St Mellons regularly. The old farmhouse conversions and listed buildings near the church need careful, sympathetic work – the right slate, the right mortar mix, an understanding of how these older structures move and breathe. The newer estates bring a different set of demands: ageing concrete tiles, first-generation flat garage roofs, UPVC fascias that are starting to show their age. We’re comfortable with both.
Two Very Different Properties – One Roofer Who Handles Both
Cardiff roofing companies covering St mellons are generally not as local as us. We cover the full CF3 area and can offer:
-
- Emergency 24/7 roof repairs – out to you any time, day or night, for leaks and storm damage
- Standard roof repairs – natural slate, plain clay tile, concrete interlocking – we work with all of them
- Full roof replacements – complete re-roofing on older and newer properties throughout the area
- New roof installation – garages, outbuildings, extensions and garden rooms across CF3
- Flat roof repairs and EPDM installation – membrane replacement on garage roofs and flat-section additions
- Chimney repairs – repointing, flaunching, lead flashing and full cap-off where needed
- Chimney removal – redundant stacks taken down and the opening made good
- Guttering, fascias and soffits – cleared, repaired or replaced throughout
Getting the Materials Right for Each Property
On a 1990s semi off St Mellons Road, matching the existing concrete tile profile is straightforward – the manufacturers are still making those products and the range of compatible options is wide. On a 200-year-old stone cottage near the church, it’s a different conversation. Original Welsh natural slate varies in thickness and colour between quarries and between eras. Mortar mixes on older buildings need to be softer and more flexible than modern cement mixes – hard cement on a lime-built wall causes damage over time. These things matter and we take them seriously.
We’ll always tell you which materials we’re proposing and why, before any work starts. If there’s a choice between a cheaper option and a more appropriate one, we’ll lay both out clearly and let you decide.
